Product reviews for XDP Wrinkle Black Gear Reduction Starter - Ford 7.3L Powerstroke 1994-2003

The OEM Mitsubishi starter in my -02 7.3 was labouring to turn the engine over, especially when cold. I could not find OEM parts for a DIY rebuild, so it was time for a new starter. I started looking at this unit (XDP253) as it has three-bolt mounting like the OEM starter, but a different gear reduction system and drive gear count than the OEM. So, a few question marks, but the few reviews I found were positive. Order placed with BC Diesel, the starter arrived a few days later. It was well packaged, all the required components (longer mounting bolts, mounting spacer) were included. The swap was relatively easy, the only minor struggle being the top bolt, the access to which is more difficult due to the starter design.

So, how does it work? Absolutely great. Even with a bit tired batteries it turns the engine over very fast, suggesting that the current draw is less that what it was with the old starter, even when new. It's been on the truck now for about six weeks, no issues so far. The only caveat is that if you need to remove it on the road, you better have the correct combination of extensions ready for the top bolt!

Overall, a very good starter. Can't speak to longevity yet, but given how it works at the moment, I  would choose this starter over a cheap overseas aftermarket unit, all day long.
